Flat Optical Mirrors

Flat optical mirrors do not form images. They are used to change the path of the optical system. Designers often use flat optical mirrors to fold a large system so that it fits within the envelope of a small product. Designers also use mirrors to invert images left to right or up and down.

Concave Optical Mirrors

The optical power of a concave mirror is positive, like that of a convex refracting surface. Like a singlet lens, a concave mirror can produce a magnified or reduced, inverted image. The quality of the image produced by a spherical concave mirror is comparable to that obtained with a single lens element but the mirror surpasses the lens in its color performance (a mirror has no aberrations of color since all colors experience the same geometry of reflection.)
